Bob Jones Sr., fondly referred to as Mr. Bob within the farm family, served as the family patriarch, shaping the vision for The Chef’s Garden. He established the groundwork for the farm’s pioneering leadership, blending traditional farming values with modern technology. Under his guidance and care, the farm became and remains an innovative leader among small family farms – inspiring new methods for growing, harvesting, packaging, and delivering fresh vegetables with an emphasis on quality, nutrition, and flavor.

Like many farmers, Mr. Bob excelled in resourcefulness, adept at making the most of available resources and ingeniously crafting what he lacked. Even today, it’s not difficult to find pieces of equipment around the farm that bear homemade modifications dreamed up by Mr. Bob on his yellow legal pads in the middle of the night. Bob attended The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, as well as Bowling Green State University. An avid reader, he amassed a personal library of several thousand copies of old and new agricultural and business volumes, all of which he has personally read. You can find most of his collection in the Library of the Research and Development Facility at The Chef’s Garden, which still serves as a resource today.

In 2003, one of Bob’s many visionary ideas materialized with the establishment of The Culinary Vegetable Institute®, a hub for culinary exploration and research nestled within The Chef’s Garden. He also played a pivotal role in founding Veggie U®, a national non-profit program aimed at educating children about healthy eating.

Bob Jones, Sr., married his middle school sweetheart, Barbara, the summer after their senior year of high school in 1959. They were married for 60 years. His enduring legacy lies in his lifelong dedication to his faith, his family, and farming.
