Chet first came to international attention in the early 1980s when a team of young Americans flew down to Australia to challenge this country’s team. Rob Kroll, the crème de la crème of Aussie throwing, headed out to meet the Americans he would soon compete against as they warmed up on a field.
In general, a boomerang thrower might warm up by loosening up his or her muscles, checking the direction of the wind by tossing up a few blades of grass, and doing some practice throws. As Rob approached the Americans, though, he saw a young man—one he later learned was Chet—warming up slightly differently.
Chet threw his boomerang—as any other thrower might—but then he did a standing back flip and, on his way down, caught the ‘rang behind his back.
Seriously.
Later, Rob Kroll was asked to recreate his thoughts from that moment in time. “Oh, that’s easy,” Rob replied, “because my thoughts only contained two words.”
We’ll recreate them here. The first word was “Oh,” and the second one was . . . “crikey.”
“Oh . . . crikey.”
Now, back to how one becomes a boomerang champion with ten big titles. For one thing, Chet is athletic—he always has been. He’s a gymnast who owns and operates The Jungle Gym in Delaware, Ohio. He has always practised—a lot—and has always paid significant attention to his health, regularly exercising, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding bad habits.
So, one day, a mutual acquaintance decided that Chet should meet Farmer Lee Jones—and vice versa. They’re both about the same age, Ohio boys who get up early in the morning to do whatever needs to be done, and they both have a passion for farm-fresh vegetables.
And, when Farmer Lee sent Chet a box of these veggies, here’s how the scenario unfolded.
If we listed film credits, they’d look like this:
- Chet Snouffer: played by Chet Snouffer
- Carmen Snouffer, Chet’s wife, a great cook, and one of the first U.S. women to compete in boomerang tournaments, played by Carmen Snouffer
- Off-camera daughter, played by Chet and Carm’s daughter, Lyssi, isn’t likely to stay off camera very long, being a phenomenal multi-sport athlete poised to take it to the college courts
Thank you, Chet, Carm, and Lyssi! We hope you love those farm-fresh veggies.
